ADVANCED SECONDARY EDUCATION
INTRODUCTION
This examination format has been formulated on the basis of the revised geography syllabus of 2009, which replaced the 2000 syllabus. Change made in revised syllabus includes dropping off the topic on regional integration, the introduction of the new topic, and merging of some topic into another topic. ·
New topics/subtopics which has been introduced
1. The dynamic earth and consequences
2. Water use and management
3. Wetland and swamps (subtopic) ·
The topic which has been synchronized/merged with other topics
1. Environmental issues have been merged with the topic on regional focal studies like mining fishing, forestry, agriculture and tourism
2. The topic of water pollution and conservation has been incorporated in the new topic on water use and management.
GENERAL OBJECTIVES
The general objectives of geography examinations are to
1. Determine the candidate’s basic knowledge on geographical phenomena.
2. Determine candidates ability in making critical analysis and understanding of social economic and geographical constraints which hinder economic development and suggest the ways of overcoming them
3. Assess whether the candidate have acquired methods and skills of observation, measuring, recording, and interpreting geographical phenomena and use them in solving their daily life problems
4. Assess whether the candidates have acquired the social-economic skills for competing in the labor market of a globalized economy
5. enable the candidate to develop a sense of commitment to preserve and utilize resources sustainably as the heritage for the future generation
GENERAL COMPETENCES
The examination is generally testing candidate’s ability to
1. to show personal initiative and commitment to managing natural resources and the environment
2. Use natural resources sustainably in order to raise the standard of living.
3. Use different skills to overcome day to day social and economic constraints.
4. Recognize the interaction between their country and other country and draw lessons to solve existing problems.
5. Collect, organize and interpret information in numerical or statistical form
6. Use the range instrument accurately and confidently in presenting geographical information or data
7. Demonstrate socio-economical skills in order to compete successfully in the labor market within the globalized world.
EXAMINATION RUBRIC
Examination consists of two papers. Paper one focus on practical and physical geography while paper two consist of human and world economic geography topics. ·
Each paper has three hours duration.
113/1 GEOGRAPHY ONE: PRACTICAL AND PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY
This paper consists of nine questions in section A and B. the candidate is required to answer five questions. ·
Question number one is compulsory
SECTION A
It consists of four short answer questions. The candidates are required to answer two questions.
Question number one is set from the topic on topographical map interpretation and analysis and it carries a total of 25 marks ·
The remaining questions are set from topics on the application of statistics in geography, simple survey and map making, field research strategies and each question carries 15 marks
SECTION B
Consist of five essay type questions from topic on physical geography. The candidate is required to answer any three questions and each question carries twenty marks
113/2 GEOGRAPHY TWO: HUMAN AND WORLD ECONOMIC GEOGRAPHY
This paper will consist of eight essay questions divides in two section namely A and B. the candidate is required to answer five questions each question carries twenty marks.
· SECTION A
It consists of three essay questions from the topic of population and development. The candidate is required to answer two questions
· SECTION B
Consist of five essay questions from the topic on regional focal studies. The candidate is required to answer three questions
