What are planets?

Planets are large celestial bodies that orbit around stars and do not produce their own light. They are one of the major components of a solar system and are characterized by several key features:

  1. Orbiting a Star: Planets orbit around a star, typically in an elliptical or nearly circular path. In our solar system, the star is the Sun, and the planets revolve around it.
  2. Spherical Shape: Planets are generally spherical in shape due to their self-gravity. The force of gravity pulls the material of a planet toward its center, resulting in a rounded shape.
  3. Clear Orbit: Planets have cleared their orbits of most other objects. This means that as a planet formed and grew, it gravitationally attracted nearby objects or cleared them out of its path, establishing its dominance within its orbital zone.
  4. Not a Satellite: Unlike moons, which are natural satellites that orbit planets, planets do not orbit other celestial bodies. They are independent objects in their respective solar systems.
  5. Differentiated Structure: Planets have a differentiated structure, with distinct layers. Generally, they consist of a solid or rocky core, surrounded by a mantle, and an outer layer, which may be a solid crust or an atmosphere composed of gas and other substances.

In our solar system, there are eight recognized planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. These planets vary in size, composition, atmosphere, and other characteristics. Each planet has its own unique features and conditions, making them objects of great interest and study in fields such as astronomy, planetary science, and astrobiology.

Beyond our solar system, astronomers have also discovered thousands of exoplanets, which are planets orbiting stars other than the Sun. These exoplanets exhibit a wide range of sizes, compositions, and orbital characteristics, expanding our understanding of planetary systems and the potential for habitable environments beyond our own.
