The major United Nations instruments that define and guarantee human rights

The following are the major United Nations instruments that define and guarantee human rights:

  • the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
  • The International Covenant on economic, Social and Cultural rights.
  • The International covenant on civil and Political rights.
  • Two optional protocols

Human rights are further classified into individual and collective rights. This classification is due to the fact that, although most fundamental rights apply to the individual, there are those that
can only be exercised by and in groups e.g. Religious, Political or Social groups.

However, none of these classifications is absolute, for many of the rights tend to overlap the classes into which they are categorized.
