Seed dormancy is a condition in which a seed that is capable of germinating fails to germinate
CAUSES OF SEED DORMANCY
- Hard seed coat This prevents entry of water into the seed which makes emergency of the radical difficult
- Presence of incubator substances that prevent germination e.g Abscisic Acid (ABA)
- Immaturity of the embryo e.g seeds undergoes further development with in themselves before they can germinate.
- High temperature during seed storage of Seed coat hairs which interfere with oxygen absorption e.g Oarts, Barly seeds.
