Most maps use symbols, colors, shadings, or other devices to represent features or the amount, degree, or proportion of some quantity. Some symbols are self-explanatory, but it is usually necessary to include a legend box in a corner of the map to explain the symbolization.
The map legend is the box below the map which shows the interpretation of symbols and signs used in the map.
