Soil structure refers to the arrangement (aggregation) of individual particles according to their size into soil shapes. In other words, soil structure is the way in which soil particles are grouped or bound to form soil shape.
The following are importance of soil structure:
- Soil structure influences plant growth by influencing root penetration and water retention.
- It influences the soil cultivation process. Soil is readily cultivated if it is less compacted like sand.
- Soil structure is a good indicator of soil fertility. Compacted soil is assessed as more fertile as it has a higher ability to retain water and nutrients for the growth of plants.
- Soil structure has an influence on soil drainage. Compact soil like clay is poorly drained as compared to less compacted soil like sand.
- Soil structure influences soil emergence. Young plants easily emerge out where the soil is less compacted.
- Soil structure also has an influence on soil aeration. Less compacted soil like sand has a high degree of aeration as compared to the soil which is well aggregated.
